Exodus 36

Bible Passage: Exodus 36

In this chapter, we will be reading a lot of details concerning the construction of the Tent of Meeting.

This chapter deals with the details of the curtains, coverings and the frames of the Tent of Meeting.

After reading this chapter, I hope all of us can spend a few moments to ponder over why God wanted to give such detailed instructions regarding the construction of this holy Tent.

What are the significance of these details and how does this link to our faith in God in these Last Days?

Jehovah Jireh!

When God commanded the construction of the Tent of Meeting, He gave specific instruction down to the smallest details.

He not only gave instructions, He also worked, for He personally selected people to do this important and noble work.

After He had selected the people, He put His Spirit in them so that they could have the wisdom and knowledge of how to carry out this noble work.

That was not all that God had done in this work, He also provided the materials in abundance!

and they spoke to Moses, saying, “The people bring much more than enough for the

service of the work which the LORD commanded us to do.”

So Moses gave a commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the

camp, saying, “Let neither man nor woman do any more work for the offering of the

sanctuary.” And the people were restrained from bringing,

for the material they had was sufficient for all the work to be done–indeed too much.

Exodus 36:5 – 7

God provided the abundance of the material needed for the construction, but the people also had to be willing to offer what they had in their possession. And as we can see in this chapter, the people were overwhelmingly generous in their contributions.

I believe many of our members are aware of how God provided abundantly in financial term during the building of the Adam Road Church.

Despite of the shortage of funds initially, we went on ahead with the project with faith, and at the same time, members were encouraged to contribute financially either by free-will offering or loan to the church.

According to what I know, the believers were very forthcoming in their contributions, yet in the process of the building, the funds were still lacking, but when the building was up, we had an excess in our building fund accounts. This was amazing and indeed the providence of God.

So in whatever we want to do for God, we must understand the works are for God and He will provide the necessary workers, knowledge and materials for the work.

We know that in church, there are many things need to be done, but the workers are always lacking. But we must trust and understand that God will provide, we just have to do what we have to do as the servants of God.

Jesus, our Lord God had encouraged us to have faith in Him, and to pray that He would send out laborers into His field,

Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore

pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

Luke 10:2

Every Detail Counts

If we want God to be concerned and pay attention to every detail of our lives, we must also be concerned and pay attention to every detail that comes out from the mouth of God – His Words.

From the constructions of the ark in Noah’s time to the Tent of Meeting, and to the Temple in Jerusalem, God always gave very detailed instructions.

Noah did according to all that God commanded him (Gen. 6:22)

Moses did all that God had shown him on the mountain (Ex. 25:40, 26:30)

Solomon built the Temple according to the plans which God had instructed his father David (1 Chr. 28:9-19).

These ancient saints did ALL according to the instructions of God, the results:

  1. Noah and his family were saved through the great flood where every other living creature was destroyed. (Gen. 8:18, 1 Pet. 3:20b)
  2. The cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle, showing the presence of God. (Ex. 40:34)
  3. When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. (2Ch 7:1)

These ancient saints fulfilled the will of God and were thus blessed abundantly.

The True Church of the Last Days was being established in the year 1917 by the Holy Spirit, and she stood firmly on ALL the Truths derived from the Holy Bible till this very day.

The abidance of the Holy Spirit was evident as miracles, signs and wonders followed wherever the complete truth was being preached.

We who have been called to come into His True Fold are indeed the blessed lot in the world, but we must not let this grace and mercy of God which has been showered upon us be in vain.

Always have a thankful heart towards God for His salvation grace, and to fulfill every command of God that is required of us.

I am not sure everyone would appreciate my comment here but I just could not stop thinking about this after I saw a slogan in a public gent’s toilet in Shanghai.

    It goes something like this…

    “One Small Step Closer
Is One Giant Step Towards Civilization”

When I read it at first, I could not help but laugh (wanted to take a picture of the sticker but not sure the rest of the guys would have liked the idea of me banishing a camera in a public toilet) so I cannot repeat it in Chinese now.

But as I was walking away, I could not help but think how this can also apply for us as well. Perhaps if we change the slogan slightly to read….

“One Small Step Closer Towards Obedience
Is One Giant Step Towards Holiness”

Sometimes we may think that we are overwhelmed by rules and laws of God. We think that it is almost impossible for us to do everything that God wants and has commanded for us to do. And then in so thinking, we do not even get started in keeping any. Or we try to do everything and fail, and just simply give up trying.

Shalom mentions that every detail counts. It is the same for Holiness. Every detail counts. And it all starts with the first step, then the next and then the next… and it goes on and on. And each time we strive to do more thing more in obedience to God’s will, we are taking a giant step towards Holiness and being perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect.

One small step today… let’s start doing it together.

  2. Are the details in Ex 36 really enough to build the tabernacle? eg what was the design of the cherubim in Ex 36:35?

i think the records in Ex 36 were not enough to build the tabernacle. Then why did Moses repeat the things which he wrote in Ex 26:1-37 when he could have made reference to Ex 26:1-37 right?

i think the extra element in Ex 35 compared to Ex 26 was the heart of the people. This is especially important after the molded calf in Ex 32.

Ex 36:1 “And Bezalel and Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whom the LORD has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the LORD has commanded.”

Ex 36:2 …in whose heart God has put wisdom, everyone whose heart was stirred, to come and do the work.

What was the wisdom which God put in their hearts?

i guess it was the wisdom to revere(敬) and fear( 畏) God (神).

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Prov 9:10)

God reiterated the Sabbath rest before they even started work (Ex 35:1-3) (the best human resource policy in the world).

Quite sure God also gave “the beginning of wisdom” before He imparted skills to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver – those who do every work and those who design artistic works (Ex 35:35)

A thousand mile starts with a step. The journey to heaven starts with a step too. Take the first step from the door of the heart.

Secondly, details of all hard work put in by the Israelites to build the tabernacle according to all that the LORD commanded could not be fully recorded in Exodus 36 bec of limitation of time, ink, writing material… and not within of the inspiration of God.

Theirs were hard work. mine? haha 别说笑了.
