Genesis 49

Bible Passage:  Genesis 49

Alas, we are now approaching the end of our second reading of the book of Genesis.. And again, we see the ending of the hard life of Jacob..

Kinda like watching a re-run of some drama series, don’t you think?

I promise this will be one of my shortest sharings, because this blabbermouth had been extremely busy over the past week (not busy blabbering mind you..) and now has a limited time to write this..

And here again, we see the final blessings that Jacob gave to each of His sons. And we are sure to note that each of the blessings are different, and certainly varying in.. in.. er… Blessfulness? (Note to self: Brush up on vocab)

And I think we’ll notice that at least for the more prominent brothers, for example, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah and Joseph, as in the ones whom we have read of what they had done according to the book of Genesis, we can kind of see that they had been blessed according to the things they had done.

Take for example, Reuben. In verse 4, Because you went up to your father’s bed. We have read about that in chapter 35. It was an evil he did then, and well.. His blessing turned out to be not so good, if you know what I mean. And on the other end of the spectrum, we have our hero, Joseph! There he is right there.. Standing tall on the skyscraper.. Dressed in superhero apparel and cape.. Looking out for evil-doers to… Get back to reality!!

Ahem… Anyway, stupid imaginations aside, this example of a REAL hero (take that you comic cape crusaders!), we can see that his blessings was one of the longer ones and in deed full of blessings. And that’s because we all know what he had done throughout the course of his interesting life. In fact, I think we can probably sort of guess how each of the brothers were like according to their blessings. Of course some of them had done things very wrong, but well, like I said it’s my opinion, a rough guide.

For us today, we won’t exactly be blessed by our own father in this manner. But we are seeking and pursuing for blessings from our heavenly Father. Or at least I think we should be.. But from this chapter, we can see that what kind of blessings (or even curses) we could be getting depends on what we do in our lives. Are we living our life according to the commandments and the will of God? Or is our life just one big havoc party, almost devoid of God?

Over the past chapters, we have been looking through the life of Joseph, going from to there, all the while never forgetting the commandments of God and doing the right things in the eyes of God. Are we able to follow his example?

Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. – Deuteronomy 28: 1

Therefore, we have to strive to live a life that is pleasing to God. We have to constantly pray and read the Bible daily so that we can lead a life full of spiritual nurture. And we must ensure that we observe His commandments carefully. All of them! And in turn, we may receive these good spiritual blessings from our heavenly Father..

May we all be able to attain good blessings from our Father in heaven..

And like I promised a short(er) sharing.. 1.04 Microsoft Word pages’ worth! God bless…

One Response to “Genesis 49”

  1. Gen 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty in their dwelling place.

    They were and they were his sons. Why did Israel state the obvious? to emphasize that their association was an unruly “gang”?

    Gen 49:6 Let not my soul be united to their council;
    Let not my honour be united to their assembly;
    For in their anger they slew a man,
    In their self-will they hamstrung an ox.

    Israel might be referring to the incident when Simeon and Levi used the excuse of circumcision to put Shechem and his people in pain and killed them (Gen 34:25). Israel was expressing his disagreement to what they did bec anger and self-will over-ruled their hearts. Israel did not want his honour (ie his God) to be associated to their self-righteous action.

    Gen 49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
    And their wrath for it is cruel!
    I will divide them in Jacob
    And scatter them in Israel.

    Their fiery and wrath was not of God’s mercy.
    “I” am the LORD.

    Did the prophecy of being scattered come true for the tribe of Simeon and Levi?

    In a way the prophecy came true for the tribe of Levi. But in a positive way according to the will of God. The tribe of Levi became Levites who were set apart to serve God (Num 3:41). The Levites lived in 48 cities among the Israelites (Josh 21:41).

    Josh 21:45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD spoken to the house of Israel. All come to pass.

    God is slow to anger and full of mercy.

    (enjoy KHF very much today. Dn CL and Bro N, looking foward to sermons on the twelve tribes :D )
